Otherwise known as Our Observations about Australia :
Don't appear to be able to buy Lamb Stock cubes anywhere...In a country that breeds and exports 1000s of the buggers each year!
Petrol in Sydney is cheapest on Tuesdays...eh????? Although unleaded is normally available between 80 - 90 cents per litre (33p - 38p).
Shampoos are sold in huge bottles for people with hair as long as Repunzel's.
Items in shops are "On Special" not "On Sale".
Off Licences are called Bottle Shops, and many are Drive Through! Still haven't seen one with bullet proof glass protecting them from the customers.
Wine in boxes (casks) can actually be good quality.
Jacobs Creek is seen as a low quality wine compared to others available.
When buying a new house, people generally buy a plot of land and then choose the style of house they'd like. This leads to "housing estates" here having much more individuality.
Teenage boys tend to drive old cars with 4 litre engines and make as much noise as possible as late as possible whilst removing as much tyre tread as possible! These intellectual individuals are known as HOONS (HOOligaNS - it's the Ozzie obsession to shorten words).
Car Drivers - There's very little "mateship" when it comes to driving on the roads. It appears that the sun glasses Australians wear filter out the flashing motion indicators make. What else could it be?
A Layby...this is somewhere to pull the car over when you're lost , right? No! This is simply when a shop puts an item to one side and you pay it off over a number of weeks.
Federal, State and Local Governments...jobs for the boys in my opinion.
Retired people who head north to Queensland for the winter months are known as "Mexicans".
Sweets (e.g. bons bons, toffees) are known as Lollies, and an Ice Lolly is an Ice Pop.
Some TV adverts have been made using an old BETAmax video in a garage studio...or that's how they look.
Seafood..the choice is usually pretty large. Prawns are really worth eating - not the waterlogged attempts seen on many UK supermarket shelves.
The Back Garden (including those with grass) are Back Yards.
Obession with Beef and all that can be made from it - Pork sausages are available but the quality is a little dodgy. You really need to find a specialist pork butcher.
More to follow we're sure...
