Canberra is the home to Australia's Government, placed here
as a compromise between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne in the competition to
host the capital of the newly-federated Australia. A surprisingly quiet city of
wide avenues, green spaces and modern architecture - supposedly a utopian vision
of metropolis - but in our opinion a sterile clinical town-planners dream that
was completely lacking in any heart or soul. Not helped by the fact it was
freezing - but with a maximum summer temp. of 21 degrees, then no wonder! Lots
of good attractions though, especially the guided tours of Parliament. Somewhere
to pass through.......

Pub Trivia:
More laws are passed in the Australian Parliament
each year than the UK & US put together! They also sit for a 3rd of the
time, so reinforcing the no-bull attitude of the Aussies we think!
The Upper House is the ONLY place to see
red EXIT signs in the whole of Oz. A special law was passed to allow this to
ensure they fitted with the rest of the room's interior! |
