Bundaberg, Rockhampton & Mackay

Location : 368kms North of Brisbane Population : 45,000 The start of the sugar cane fields and the southern moist approach to the Great Barrier Reef

Info

Definitely the start of sugar land! Bundaberg rum is the best selling spirit in Australia. The distillery tour was worth the stop, notwithstanding the 2 free drinks at the end of the tour! The rum making process utilises all of the cane, with waste being recycled back into the land. Back-burning of the fields was a common sight - as we were lucky to visit during crushing season (June - Dec). Mackay boasted much the same and is known as the sugar capital of Australia, boasting the biggest marina in the state and home to one of the world's biggest bulk sugar terminals.

Rockhampton is situated on the Tropic of Capricorn, a real country town with many original buildings and still hosting rodeos! It is the self-proclaimed beef capital of Australia! The botanic gardens and zoo are both worth seeing and are free of charge.
